Developed in 1996 from Dennis Arrow, the Trident is a new type of super low floor double decker. 12m, 11.3m and 10.6m and 10.3m three axled variants (traded as Trident 3) are focused on the Far East market. On the other hand, 9.9m, 10.5m, 10.6m and 11.4m two axled variants (traded as Trident 2) are available in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Owing to the lack of competitors, the Trident 2 was very popular in its early years in Britain. The sales volume dropped a lot when its Volvo and Scania counterparts were put into market. Although China Motor Bus has not actually bought any Trident 3, it was the first operator in Hong Kong which placed order for Tridents. The order was later replaced by Dragons (DA83-92) due to the slow development of Tridents in 1996. The first Trident registered in Hong Kong was ATR1 (HJ2127) of Kowloon Motor Bus. It was registered in early 1997. Then the bus was allocated to Route 1A. In the beginning, there were figures pasted on the windows at the lower deck. In May 1999, it came across a traffic accident and suffered serious front and rear damage. It had been repaired for months before it returned to service in December 1999. After the success of ATR1, Kowloon Motor Bus have ordered 369 more 12m Tridents. They have Alexander ALX500 bodies or Duple Metsec DM5000 bodies. In addition, 150 10.6m Tridents have been purchased by Kowloon Motor Bus. 50 of them have Duple Metsec bodies and the remaining ones have Alexander ALX500 bodies. Long Win Bus Company purchased 150 Tridents in 1997. 25 of them were fitted with coach seats and the rest were fitted with city bus seats. One of them suffered total lost in a fire in 1999. Dennis compensated by building a new bus with Duple Metsec body. Citybus also bought more than 200 tridents. Some of them have luxury seats and luggage racks and were deployed to Airport Routes. The other buses are deployed to Island Routes and cross-harbour routes. New World First Bus acquired 190 Alexander bodied 12m Tridents, 62 Duple Metsec bodied 12m Tridents, 30 Alexander bodied 11.3m Tridents, 62 Alexander bodied 10.6m Tridents, 1 Duple Metsec bodied 10.6m Trident and 60 Duple Metsec bodied 10.3m Tridents since it was founded in 1998. They are all 3-axled models with wheelchair access. Among these Tridents, the 10.3m model were 4.17m tall and most of them were fitted with tree bumpers although they were all removed later. Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation purchased 22 11.3m long Alexander bodied Tridents. Later, they purchased 47 10.6m and 4 11.3m second hand Tridents from New World First Bus. These buses were used as feeder buses from railway stations. All buses have been transferred to Mass Transit Railway Corporation after the merge. Singapore Bus Services ordered 30 12m Tridents with Duple Metsec bodies in 1997. But they entered service in 2001. In United States and Canada, Duple Metsec bodied Tridents were purchased by cities like New York and Vancover. Since late 2002, the Trident 3 chassis was built as a complete bus called Enviro 500. It was fitted with Alexander Dennis Enviro 500 body. 12m, 12.8m and 11.3m variants were available. For Trident 2 chassis, Enviro 400 complete bus was also available. Since 2009, Kowloon Motor Bus and Citybus introduced Enviro 400s. They entered service since 2010.
