The prototype was first supplied to BKV, the operator in Budapest, in 1972 and it ceased production in 1993 when its successor, Ikarus 415 entered production. More than ten variants were produced during the vintage. In 1992, İstanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel İşletmeleri Genel Müdürlüğü (IETT), the municipal government owned transport company in Istanbul, introduced a number of Ikarus 260s.
