The SD 202 is the successor of the SD200 double-decker. These Waggon Union bodied buses were designed for Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), the city-owned transport authority.

The first prototype was allocated the fleet number 3500. It entered service in 1981. It was fitted with a 141kW engine.

The second and the third prototype (3501 and 3502) entered service in 1984. They are fitted with 147kW engines.

Production models entered service from 1986-1992, with fleet nos. 3503-3967, totaled 465. The buses were fitted with 150kW engines. 3503-3707 do not have wheelchair access, while the late comers allowed assisted wheelchair access.
