The Unimog was designed as an
off-road vehicle after World War II. The name Unumog stood for "Universal
Motor Gerät", i.e. universal motor machine It was designed for a
versatile vehicle for farms. After that, it was modified to allow it
attain a higher maximum speed than conventional tractors and allow the
use on roads and highways. Because of its power and versatility, it was
widely used in military and civil aspects which required off road
operations.
The U 1300L belonged to the 435
series, which was a heavy duty class in the Unimog family.
