The Mercedes Benz O 530 Citaro series was put into market in 1997. The design was to replace the O 405 series. Unlike O 305 and O 405, it has a total different design. Based on the same chassis, most parts are standardized to make the construction more economical. Two Euro 2 diesel engines with 5 power ratings are available for different requirements. The configuration inside the bus can be adjusted according to the preference of the operator. Air-conditioners and heaters are optional. The series includes several models, Citaro and Citaro G (city buses), Citaro L (long city bus) Citaro Ü (rural service), Citaro CNG, Citaro G CNG (Euro 5 natural gas powered city buses), Capacity (longer articulated buses for BRT), Citaro BZ (hydrogen fuel cell buses), Citaro K (shorter buses superseding O 520 Cito) and Citaro LE (low entry buses). In 1999, Üstra, the public transport operator in Hannover, invited different bus manufacturers for a totally new type of bus for use in the Expo 2000. Eventually, Evobus, the bus division of Mercedes Benz, won the contract by providing 101 natural gas powered Citaro city buses and flexible buses. The bodyshell was designed by an Italian designer. Two wide doors were provided between the first axle and the second axle for quick access and egress.
