Of all models
of Olympian, the standard 9.56m was most favoured by the operators in
Great Britain. Its short length and good manoeuvrability had won
numerous orders. The vehicle was available in single door or dual door
configurations, with the staircase mounted in front, amidships or at the
back.
In 1981, five
Olympian demonstrators arrived Hong Kong, of which one of them was a
9.56m model. It received Eastern Coach Works bodywork with 2+2 dual
purpose layout. It had a single width entrance and full depth sliding
windows. The operator of this bus was China Motor Bus Co. After that, no
more 2-axled Olympians were ordered by that company.
However,
another major operator in Hong Kong, the Kowloon Motor Bus Co., which
received 3 10.3m demonstrators, endorsed orders for 9.5m model in early
1980s. A total of 120 buses were delivered from 1983 to 1985. They all
received Alexander R-type bodies, although small amendments had been
made in later batches. Two of them were converted to 2+2 layout in the
1990s. All these buses have been withdrawn.
Citybus of Hong
Kong also obtained a small number of second-hand ONLXB.1RFs of 1982 in
1987. They had Charles Roe bodies. Some of them were converted to
open-top buses and the others training buses when air-conditioned buses
replaced them in mid-1990s.
Other operators
in Hong Kong include open-top sight-seeing tour agents, like Gray Line
Hong Kong and Igors.
Since Hong Kong
and Singaporean operators tended to choose 3 axle models, no more
2-axled Olympians have been ordered by such companies since 1986. On the
contrary, it is very popular in Great Britain and you can find such
vehicles in every part of Britain.
