Leyland Cub is a very old and famous series of single deckers. However, the CU series Cub illustrated here is totally different from that Cub.

In 1979, Leyland introduced a new range of buses based on the Terrier. It was named Cub. There were 3 models in this family which intended to meet the growing demand for cheap, simple and cost effective bus chassis. Like the Victory II, there was an entrance ahead of the front axle, making the chassis suitable for one-man operation.

The CU335, CU385 and CU435 had the engine moved forward nearly 10 inches and the steering wheel placed more upright than the equivalent to give an improved driving position. The standard engine was the 5.7 litre 6.98NV set to produce 85.8kW at 2600 rpm, with the option of the derated 6.98DV developing 72.4kW at 2600rpm. Transmission was through a five-speed synchromesh gearbox with overdrive top, to a spiral rear axle. The buses had 16 inch wheels so that it has low step heights and a maximum speed of over 100km/h.

The three numbers in the model designation meant the metric wheelbase of the vehicle. For example, CU335 has 3350mm wheelbase.

The prototype of the range was first seen at the 1979 Scottish Show. The demonstrator received a Wadham Stringer Vanguard bodywork, registered YBK 129V and seating 29 within an overall width of 2.3m. A number of cubs were sold to local authorities. In early 1981, Lothian Regional Transport ordered 18 Duple bodied Cubs. They received Allison automatic transmission and were delivered in the later half of the year. Another Cub was exhibited at the 1981 Scottish Show with a 22 seat McLay body. In 1982 Commercial Motor Show, Reeve-Burgess produced another 25 seat demonstrator.
