They were once the largest fleet of such buses in the world. The first 15 were fitted with homemade timber framed bodywork (B30C). About 95 buses were introduced from 1955 to 1962, fitted with Duple Metsec metal bodywork. Another two buses introduced in 1956 were fitted with Longwell Green bodies (FC27F) and became sightseeing coaches, painted in a special livery of royal blue and white, with the addition of extra brightwork. Conversion was common among these buses. Some of them were re-bodied, some converted to one-man-operated buses, some others were converted to service vehicles, training bus, bullion vans, goods vehicles, and tree cutters.
