It competed with Leyland Panther. London Transport purchased more than 1,000 buses of this type in the late 1960s. Some of them were 33 ft long and some others were 36 ft long. The 36 ft long buses were called Merlin. However, these buses were not welcomed by the operator and they were gradually replaced by Leyland Nationals and MCW Metrobuses. Withdrawal of these buses did not mean demise of the model, although a considerable number of these buses were scrapped. Some of them were sold to operators in other parts of Britain. More than 60 Swifts were later shipped to Malta and many of them served public service routes until public transport reform on 3 July 2011.
