The Titan is said to be the most remarkable bus of Ashok Leyland. Production of the bus began in 1968 after they received a prototype chassis (Chassis No. 700338) from Leyland built in January 1967. Ashok Leyland O.680 engine and five-speed heavy-duty constant-mesh gearbox were fitted to the PD3 main frames. The front was also modified. Three additional rows of seats were added to each deck so that the total no. of seats accounted to almost 100. The performance charts submitted to Leyland from Ashok claimed that a fully laden Ashok Leyland titan could restart on a gradient of approximately 1:3. BEST of Bombay took the first Ashok Titan with Sion Garage H96R bodywork.

A prototype ALPD1/1, Chassis No. TD74.001, was supplied to China Motor Bus Co. in late 1973. This was the first double-decker ever to be exported from India. The chassis was fitted with Ashok AL680 engine, 6.25:1 rear axle and 5-speed pneumo-cyclic gearbox. Zion Coachworks of Bombay built a full-fronted body of FH45/31D for the bus. It has a single width doorway just behind the front axle and a double width doorway immediately ahead of the rear axle. It was first registered in May 1974 as BG3467 and allocated fleet no. APD1.

With the participation of Hino, Hino engines were once fitted to the chassis. Power steering and the development of full-fronted variant have improved the type and this may be the key that production is still in progress 30 years after the British ceased production of vertical front-engined conventional double-deckers.
